Hi, as you can see my mouth has been sewn shut…won’t you please open up your mouth and speak out against this horrific act of animal cruelty? It is repeatedly done over and over to thousands of snakes each year. If you are reading this now and viewing this photograph, chances are I didn’t make it :(

“It’s just a snake…….., it’s not like it’s a dog or horse or a bird.” Next thing you know, it’s some other stupid reason to hate an animal that has a rightful place on this planet.
Guys, these snakes NEED our help— and badly at that.
I’m astounded at the level of cruelty displayed at these roundups. These animals are first removed from their homes via gasoline in their dens, then they’re lumped into a single container with no access to food, water, or even a place to hide. They are being purchased for as much as $10 PER POUND for an event where they are partially frozen and have their mouths sewn shut.
This year, about 1,700 pounds of rattlesnakes were purchased for the event.
This is stated in a news article… and even one of the event coordinators admits to sewing the mouths shut:
“The hunt weekend offers a number of novel experiences, such as having a taste of deep-fried rattlesnake meat and the opportunity to have a picture taken with a live rattlesnake.
“They really drape it over your shoulders but they are defanged and their mouths are sewn shut,” England said.”
How no one is doing anything about this legally is beyond me. This is a prime example of animal cruelty and desperately needs to be stopped.
Please remember that during this month, upwards of 10,000 rattlesnakes will die in these roundups. My question for you, is are you going to sit there and just let it happen?

This activity has been reported to local law enforcement, who deny knowing anything about any alleged “animal cruelty” and are therefore doing nothing to help these animals. Until such a time as they do, we are left to assume that they do not consider this an illegal activity, despite their own laws against mistreating live animals.
These poor creatures are being hunted to the point that I doubt the species will be able to sustain itself… this year, the events were paying as much as $10 per pound on these animals due to how scarce they’re becoming. Then, the poor creatures are subjected to torture… for what? For our own amusement. How sick is that?
The above pictures show that these animals have had their mouths sewn shut so that people can take pictures with them… they ARE alive and aware during this. What makes this practice acceptable with these animals? If it were a dog or a cat, I have no doubt that people would be having a fit, but for a snake? No biggie.
Before people say, “Call PETA/HSUS!”— they have been notified and are “staying out of the issue”. I guess they only have time to attack exotic pet owners, but could care less about the WILD animals that are being tortured… Guess they’re not cuddly enough and therefore “deserve to be eradicated”.
For those interested in joining us against the Rattlesnake Roundups, please, come to our facebook, or even just reblog this to get the word out!
This rattlesnake was tortured for photo opportunities in Apache, Oklahoma. They freeze the snakes (which starts the crystallization of their blood) and then sew their mouths shut. Snakes are then used like props for photos and are left baking in the hot sun all weekend long. Snakes feel pain and suffer just like any other living being does.

Whaling in the Faroe Islands has been practiced since about the time of the first Norse settlements on the islands. The hunts, called “grindadráp” in Faroese, are non-commercial and are organized on a community level; anyone can participate. The hunters first surround the pilot whales with a wide semicircle of boats. The boats then drive the pilot whales slowly into a bay or to the bottom of a fjord. Most Faroese consider the hunt an important part of their culture and history. The Faroe people enjoy this kind of inhumane slaughter. Many of the pilot whales are cut several times, beaten, and teased before they die. Entire pilot whale families are killed this way (unborn, calves, parents, elders). Another sad thing about these killings is that nobody in the Faroe Islands can truthfully say that these killings are for food to survive. They only do it because of tradition. This tradition even “tortures” kids and people on the islands because of the high level of mercury and heavy metals in the flesh and blubber of the whales. It gives kids and young people health problems for the rest of their lives, including nerve diseases. Faroe authorities tell people not to eat the meat and blubber because of health issues.

The annual Rattlesnake Roundup in Claxton, Georgia has changed into a wildlife festival that will celebrate the increasingly rare reptiles instead of killing them. The Evans County Wildlife Club recently announced the switch; for 44 years, hunters would bring in rattlesnakes to the Roundup to show the attendees, milk them for their venom, then butcher them for their meat and skin. At the renamed Claxton Rattlesnake and Wildlife Festival, snakes will still be on hand, but brought by conservation groups to educate the public. The club’s head noted, “”It’s nothing but education and conservation, which is what our club was intended for in the beginning. We hope it’s going to be a bigger, better festival and everyone will benefit.”
“Georgia is blessed with a rich natural heritage of animals and plants. All of these species — even the rattlesnakes — should be allowed to exist,” said Bill Matturro of Protect All Living Species. “Rattlesnakes serve an important role in the food chain by controlling rodent populations and should be respected.”
Hunters, habitat loss and road mortality have imperiled the reptiles. Conservation groups the Center for Biological Diversity, Protect All Living Species and One More Generation last year began the multi-year process of requesting protection as “threatened” for the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake under the Endangered Species Act. The Eastern Diamondback is the largest rattlesnake in the world, and is now absent or rare across large portions of its former habitat.
While Claxton has made the switch, Rattlesnake Roundups still happen in the U.S. across the Midwest and South (see a list of Roundups here.) Sign One More Generation’s petition to stop Rattlesnake Roundups here.
